Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
