Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Genius in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
